Sir Alan Cobham: 1926 London to Melbourne welcome flight

Cobham - our namesake

The name Cobham is synonymous with pioneering and excellence in the field of aviation. Company namesake Sir Alan Cobham was a passionate aviation pioneer and an innovative entrepreneur.

During a time when flying was not commonplace, his dream was to make flying accessible to the people. In 1926, Cobham made history when he became the first pilot to complete a return trip from England to Australia.

Cobham departed the River Medway, England on 30 June 1926 in a De Havilland D.H. 50J G-EBFO aircraft. Cobham arrived in Essendon on 15 August 1926 and was greeted by a crowd estimated at 100,000 people.

At the end of this epic adventure, within days of his return to England, Cobham was awarded a knighthood by King George V.

Sir Alan’s passion for aviation and innovation lives on in our company today.

A South Australian success story

In 1990, a group of South Australian entrepreneurs founded National Jet Systems (NJS) to provide services to pioneering oil and gas producer Santos. They established a high-capacity closed-charter jet service to a mine site – pioneering the introduction of fly-in, fly-out services using jet aircraft in South Australia.

The operation started with one aircraft flying from Adelaide to Moomba and Jackson with a team of 15 employees. This operation set the foundation for future relationships, and subsequent contracts, which has ultimately led to us becoming the organisation that we are today.

In 2000, Jet Systems Group was acquired by Cobham plc, a global aerospace technology company founded by Sir Alan Cobham and rebranded as Cobham Aviation Services. The organisation experienced further growth with the alignment of the Australian and UK based aviation services businesses.

In 2020, Cobham plc was acquired by leading global private equity firm Advent International.

Cobham Aviation Services now operates as a standalone business in Australia with its own Board of Directors.

In 2020 we celebrated 30 years of flying in Australia.
